The Town of Clayton Approves Development Plan for Copper District to serve Rapidly Growing Community

Craig Davis Properties’ newest mixed-use development will contain residential units, retail uses and class A office space adjacent to expanding regional healthcare facility

CARY, NC – The Town of Clayton approved a Master Land Use Plan this week that will allow Craig Davis Properties, Inc. (CDP) to proceed with development of a 69-acres mixed-use community located at the intersection of Highway 70 Bypass and Highway 42 in Clayton. The Copper District, previously known locally as Penny Farms, will be among one of the largest new developments in the region and include specialty healthcare office space adjacent to Johnston UNC Health’s facility expansion.

The Copper District and the Johnston UNC Health expansion will provide the community with much-needed specialized and state-of-the-art healthcare options and will help alleviate the existing housing shortage. The development will include multiple 6 to 10 story Class A office buildings. These new facilities will serve to improve much-needed and convenient healthcare access in Johnston County, the fastest growing county in North Carolina.

“This entire development is a welcome addition to our fast growing community and citizens in Clayton and throughout the county who increasingly need access to local, specialized healthcare facilities without having to travel to our urban neighbors on a regular basis,” said Mayor Jody McLeod. “We are grateful to have Johnston UNC Health and private sector partners like Craig Davis Properties to work with both the town and county to improve access to healthcare and other lifestyle amenities closer to home.”

In addition to the town’s zoning and master plan approval, both the town and Johnston County Board of Commissioners passed economic development incentive grants for the project, giving this project critical infrastructure support for facilities surrounding the development with improved sewer, water supply and roads.

“We are thrilled to see this project vision turn into a reality,” said Craig Davis, CDP Founder and CEO. “It was hands-down a team effort between local officials, regional healthcare provider Johnston UNC Health, and the Penny family to bring this opportunity to the Clayton community. The Copper District will not only provide class A office space to this region, but will also expand much-needed housing options and retail conveniences for the community as it continues to grow.”

The Copper District is one of CDP’s newest developments, focused on bringing convenience to life. The project will include:

  • Class A office buildings that may include healthcare specialty offices
  • Broad range of retail shopping, including restaurants and entertainment
  • Lodging and concierge services
  • A public library
  • A variety of residential housing options
  • Outdoor recreation and amenity spaces

“As a member of the Penny Family, lifelong resident of Clayton and now as part of the CDP team, I am proud to see this property evolve into a timely and well-suited destination for our community as it grows,” said Dean Penny, CDP Project Executive. “The newly named development, the Copper District, will provide future generations of Clayton residents exciting opportunities to work, live, shop, eat and play.”

Construction on the site is expected to begin Spring of 2022.
